Spain 2013 Day 6--Granada and The Alhambra

Today was our day to visit the city of Granada and the most visited site in Spain, The Alhambra.  Mostly built in the 9th century, it is now the most significant example of Arab-Islamic Architecture in Spain.

Before we visited the Alhambra, we walked around the city of Granada.  I really loved this city.  It was a completely different city than Sevilla.  Chris' family historian has traced their family (Perezchica) through Mexico and to the city of Granada as far back as 1745. There is record that Juan Bentura Perez Chica and his wife Ysave Lopez de Haro baptized their daughter Francisca Bentura Perez Chica at Iglesia de San Matias on July 24, 1745. How many people can say they have traced their family back this far? We tried to get inside the church but it was locked, but here is a picture of a Perezchica in front of the church where the Perezchica's worshipped as far back as 1745.

We went back to the church a few hours later to see a crowd standing outside the door.  We were hoping that they were about to go in, but when we asked one of the men he said they had just had a funeral and the church was closed.  I imagined the Perezchica's congregating outside this church just like this family was doing on this day.

The Perezchica's walked down this road, Calle San Matias, going to church in the 1700's!

On recommendation from Jeff Webb, the owner of our b&b, El Amparo, we stopped for lunch at Bodegas Castaneda, near the Cathedral. We tried "guiso" a thick stew of white beans and potatoes, perfect on this cold day.

We also had a huge plate of meats and cheeses

After lunch we walked through Plaza Nueva up the steep hill to the Albayzin neighborhood.

On our way up we caught a view of The Alhambra

At the top of the Albayzin neighborhood is the Mirador San Nicolas, a wonderful view of The Alhambra.

We made our way over to the Alhambra for our check-in.  There are a limited number of tickets each day and you buy a pass for either 8am-2pm or 2pm-8pm.  You also have to purchase a ticket that is a timed entry into the Nasrid Palace and our ticket was the last entry of the day at 7pm.

The first part we visited was the Generalife Gardens.  Chris really liked these stone patterns throughout the gardens.

One of my favorite buildings at The Alhambra was Los BaƱos (the baths) because of the carved out pieces of the roof

It was nearing 7pm and time for us to enter the Nasrid Palace, the highlight of The Alhambra.  The tile work was amazing!

Italy Day 8: driving back to Rome through Deruta

Our flight was out of Rome the next day so we drove back the back way--through the famous paper-making town of Fabriano, over the mountains, into Umbria and south to Rome.  We stopped at the Umbrian ceramic town of Deruta to find that everything was really expensive and tourist driven.

There was a beautiful duomo (church) in town.

For our last night in Rome, we unknowingly booked a bed and breakfast that was owned by the daughter and brother of Marco, owner of Arco dei Tolomei, our host for the 3 days we were in Rome at the beginning of our trip.

The bed and breakfast is called Relais Teatro Argentina and it was equally as wonderful as the Arco dei Tolomei.

I especially liked the windows in our room

The Relais Teatro Argentina is located just off the Largo di Torre Argentina, a busy square with ruins of Pompey's theatre and four Republican Roman temples. A photo of the square from our trip to Rome four years before:

When we were there four years ago I noticed there were so many stray cats. I recently found out that it is actually a cat sanctuary called Roman Cats.

We had not stopped thinking about the delicious pizza we had at Pizzeria Ai Marmi when we had first arrived in Rome, so we went again!

Fried Artichoke is a specialty in Rome and it's very different than anything fried in the US--very light and doesn't seem as unhealthy!

Our final stop for the night was for gelato recommended by our b&b. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the shop but it was delicious.

Pacific Grove and Monterey, California

A few weeks ago we drove to Pacific Grove, California to spend the weekend with our friends, Eddie and Jessica. I had never been to the Monterey area and a visit was long overdue.

We woke up one morning to a deer in the next door neighbor's back yard

I was of course obsessed with this deer and came to the conclusion that he must be hurt because why else would he stay in the next door neighbor's backyard when we were so close? I later saw him walking away with a limp:(

On the way back to LA we stopped at Pinnacles National Monument so that I could get another stamp on my National Parks Passport. The "pinnacles" are eroded leftovers of an extinct volcano.

We took backroads home through cow fields. Cows were grazing along the roads, not many cars come by here.

We stopped by Carrizo Plain National Monument to see what it looked like in the middle of summer. A very big contrast to what it looked like covered in wildflowers just two and a half months earlier
